Seventh Grade Bible Class Description and Learning Updates
Class Description:
Pirke Avot
-
Pirkei Avot, generally translated as "Chapters of the Fathers" can also be translated as "Chapters of Fundamental Principles." Pirkei Avot is the wisdom of Torah distilled, summarized, organized and laid open for us to absorb and integrate. By learning Avot, we come to understand how to look at the world through Jewish eyes. And we begin to understand why the Jews need to study, live and teach the world Torah wisdom.

7th grade Judaica Tuesday
First let me start with an apology. I thought that the Shofar worksop would be held on Tues so I did not post the first day assignment for that class. Your student is to ask you for a one sentence piece of advice about the importance of religious school. S/he is also to create a one sentence piece of advice for her/his classmates on how to survive religious school. This is to be written in her/his spiral notebook.
9/15
We began our study of PIRKE AVOT with text that read:
Rabbi Shimon said, "There are three crowns: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of royalty. However the crown of a good name is greaer than all of them." In pairs and in groups we are trying to understand what the three crowns might symbolize--the big idea. If you were to wear one of these crowns, what might it say about you.
We only had time to begin tha discussion. I believe it was Danielle who suggested that the crown of Torah represented someone who had either studied or memorized the Torah. Zach P. suggested tha it stood for one who lived by its teachings.
The students should continue to think about these 3 crowns. I will also be asking them to rank the three before we turn our attention to the 4th one.
